Text from the sign
Every Building Tells A Story: Shoe In The Wall

In the wall of the basement stairway there is a shoe. The Johnston House was built in 1821, when John Johnston came from Scotland and established his farm. Europeans and Americans sometimes built shoes into their houses, often in doorways or chimneys. Most were well worn children’s shoes. We think the shoe was suppose to keep bad luck out of the house.
