Volunteer Opportunities

The Historical Society is seeking volunteers to serve on our Board of Trustees.  Trustees are key players in the effective operation of our organization.  The trustees’ primary responsibility is to maintain vigilance over our activities in policy, legal, and financial matters, as well as to oversee the operation of the organization by our staff.  If they are not already a member of the Historical Society, trustees are asked to become one at the start of their term.

The following are the duties of every Trustee:

  • Attend Board and committee meetings.
  • Demonstrate the responsibility of respecting the confidentiality of Board discussions.
  • Demonstrate the understanding of the Historical Society’s mission thus allowing for the appropriate oversight of the administrative, programmatic and financial aspects of the organization.
  • Review Board meeting minutes and other written materials presented to the Board so as to be able to vote and ratify such materials as needed.
  • Disclose any real or potential conflicts of interest to the Board by signing the Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement.
  • Remove oneself from discussion and voting on all related matters when conflicts of interest occur.
  • Hire an Executive Director who, with the staff, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Historical Society.
  • Work in conjunction with the Executive Director to move the growth and development of the organization forward according to the Historical Society’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Evaluate the performance of the Executive Director annually to ensure that goals developed together are met.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Historical Society’s programs, property, and personnel offering suggestions and ideas for improvement when needed.
  • Participate in the development and growth of fundraising activities of the Historical Society thus ensuring the organization’s long-term health and viability.
  • Provide financial support to the Historical Society by cash gifts, purchase of event tickets, and in-kind contributions.
  • Serve on the Historical Society’s committees when appointed by the President ensuring that the committee executes its assigned responsibilities.
  • Elect after nomination diverse community representation that will achieve the Historical Society’s mission, administrative, programmatic and financial goals.
