Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes: Dividing the Land: Maps and Land Distribution in Post-Revolutionary Upstate New York

The Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes welcomes Bob Kibbee for a program on local history maps. In 1790 if you stood in the center of Geneva and looked west you would see new settlers filling up the vast expanse of land  with the direct support of a varied group of entrepreneurs; if you looked east you would see surveyors finishing up the survey of the Military Tract, a distribution of bounty lands to soldiers who had enlisted in the Regiments of the New York Line during the Revolutionary War: two different approaches to land distribution, each reflected in contemporary maps. Bob Kibbee will look at some Native American-influenced maps of the area, pre- post- and Revolutionary War maps, and the impact of land distribution on settlement and growth.

Bob is a trustee of The History Center of Tompkins County. He was a reference librarian and then Map and Geospatial Librarian at Olin Library at Cornell University. He specializes in local historical cartography and is the project manager for HistoryForge, a dynamic web environment for exploring local history.
