Forgotten Geneva Sports Stories

May 13, 2019, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Geneva History Museum
543 South Main Street
Geneva, NY 14456

In this program, our curator John Marks will share some of the more unusual sports pursuits of the past. People have forgotten many athletes and sports that were once wildly popular. He will talk about the immensely popular competitive walking races held around the country, including at the Dove Block. You will meet Frank Dwyer, who played baseball at Hobart in the 1880s and went on to pitch, manage, and ump professionally. John will also discuss how rowing regattas drew competitors, journalists and, gamblers to Geneva in the 1880s. This program is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities and is free and open to the public. For more information about the program, call the Geneva Historical Society office at 315-789-5151.
